Sg. Lembing Noodle & Yong Tau Fu (Non-Halal)

Sungai Lembing was once the richest town in Pahang, known as El Dorado of the East. This tin mining town is located in Kuantan, Pahang - Malaysia.

(The only access road made of wood connecting Kuantan and Sungai Lembing)

(The famous "hanging bridge" where tourist can have their adrenalin pumping)

Everything seems nostalgic here: the buildings, the people and the price of food too!

Curry Yong Tau Fu Noodles: The curry soup was creamy and deliciously spicy! The fish paste for the Yong Tau Fu was fresh and tasted out-of-this-world!

Yong Tau Fu Noodle: The same amazing fish paste for the Yong Tau Fu and the Noodles were different. Nothing beats the home made and fresh noodles here!

I call this the economy version of the Yong Tau Fu Noodle: Same paste, same taste. The soup tasted less of MSG.

Overall, you get quality but simple food at cheap prices when you are in places like Sungai Lembing. If I could remember clearly, it only cost us about RM3 or RM4 per bowl of noodle.

Hoo Yee Kee - Prawn Noodle (Non-Halal)

"Nothing beats the prawn noodles in Penang", says one of my blog readers.

Now I say, "What if Penang brought their Prawn Noodles to KL, isn't it the same?"

Restaurant Hoo Yee Kee is known by many for their tasty prawn noodles. The sardin-packed-crowd at their newly opened outlet in Desa Setapak is a sign of confirmation.

Surprisingly, the menu is not limited to only a single type of Prawn Noodle. You can have Lala, Rib Bones, Crab, Seafood and many more.

The ordinary bowl of Prawn Noodle I ordered was up to the mark. The soup was not too salty and diluted (although the prawns were miniature in size).

Kate's Rib Bones Prawn Noodle was delicious. The Rib Bones did not not have the strong porky smell and taste. It blended very well together with the soup.

TCK 1920 Hakkakaya is one of the funniest restaurant names I have come across.

Don't you think so?

When Kate brought me here, I thought they served Japanese food till I read the fine lines: Old Pasar Road Cafe.

HAKKA KAYA, must be the influence of feng shui. Here are a few names I thought they should have tried: Hokkienkaya, TeoChewKaya, Mestikaya, Cepatkaya or Manyakkaya.

I did not know what to expect from a "Rich Hakka" restaurant. When handed the menu, a list of East meets West dishes were available.

Having craved for Nasi Lemak for the whole day, Kate ordered Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang. It tasted very good indeed. Tasty chicken rendang, addictive anchovies, irresistible sambal and delicious coconut milk pandan rice.

Since Kate went East, I ordered West. The Carbonara I ordered came with a little cup (yes, a little cup) of mushroom soup. Though small in amount but it made up in quality.

I began to realize that the chef must have a fetish for "fine dining" presentation of food.

The Carbonara, served with sufficient slices of chicken ham and mushroom was not bad considering I was already half full from the "kau kau" mushroom soup.

Getting bored of settling for either soft drinks or chinese "leung shui", we ordered "Bu Bur Cha Cha".

Once again, Hakkakaya did not fail to surprise us with the quality of food. It was served tasty creamy, rich with coconut milk or "Santan".

We were already beyond our expectation at this point. Do try the food here if you are bored with the extended choice of food served in One Utama. Located at Old Wing One Utama, it is tucked between to Kenny Roasters and Mardigras Pub.

Restaurant Kin Kin is back in business after closing for a week for er...er.. renovation wor.

Tastybananas wanted to be the 1st to do a review of the much expected "new look", which only turned out to be new "floor tiles". I did ask the owner just to make sure.

I was expecting air-conditioning, uniforms for workers, better service attitude and speedier food orders.

Nevertheless, the most important thing is the food. It remains as good and spicy as ever before. I had to do a take-away as I needed my fix of their "chilli gun powder".

So Kin Kin Pan Mee lovers and soon-to-try readers: same place, same time, same taste and same customer service (pun intended)!

Uncle Lim's "kopitiam"

Modern "kopitiams" has really been the trend. To name a few, there are Bangi Kopitiam, Kluang Station and the ever famous Old Town Cafe, which seems to be mushrooming in every corner of town.

Uncle Lim's Cafe is no different. It brings back memories of what use to cost us cents for a good cup of "kao" coffee or tea, toast bread and delicious half boiled eggs.

I like Uncle Lim's Cafe simple offering. The menu is short without over-creativity in their choice of food. (Have you tried toasted-REALLY-brown-bread-with-vanilla-ice-cream at one of the "kopitiams"?)

Now to the food .....

We ordered Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang. It came with Sambal Sotong, which added more "umpphh" to the dish. The Ayam Rendang was good and the rice still had the pandan flavour, which keeps it original.

The Laksa was equally good. The curry was creamy, but lacked in ingredients.

We also ordered the kaya toast bread. I like the bread very much compared to some-famous-mushrooming-kopitiam in town.

To make every bite different, I tried dipping the bread in my Laksa. It turned out delicious! (Warning: Acquired taste advised).

(The blend of sweet-toasted-bread with soury and spicy curry gave every bite a heck-of-a-twist)

If you are thinking of getting your dose of nostalgic "kopitiam" taste, try Uncle Lim's Cafe at Ikano Power Centre.

Steam Fish Head - Sun Fock Wah Coffee Shop (Non-Halal)

Sun Fock Wah Coffee Shop is not the regular kopitiam you will expect - not the menu, not the location. Order your favourite toast bread and kopi-ping (iced coffee) and you will have all eyeballs staring at you.

This coffee shop specializes in Steam Fish Head.

It is tucked among some light industrial area in Jalan Chan Show Lin and under a HUGE tree.

What I love about this place is they keep the menu simple:

Boss: What style of fish ahhh?
Me: What style is good ah?
Boss: Kaali (curry) lor, garlic lor, ginger lor ... (mumbles a long list of other choices)
Me: Eh...ginger lah
Boss: Vegetable leh? (mumbles a few)
Me: Eh..."khai lan" lah

All you got to do is 1) order your fish and 2) vegetable. Simple! There are also other dishes but only upon asking.

The service here is very fast, despite the crowd. We only had to wait for less than 10mins, and we were ready to feast!

The fish was well prepared. It was not too cooked and it did not have any fishy taste or smell. The portion was good for 4 pax, although it was only me and Kate.

I observed that the type of fish head differs from table to table. Maybe you can ask if which type of fish head taste better if you are planning a visit here.

Sun Fock Wah Coffee Shop will be moving to a new premise beginning 1st July 2008.

Overall: Simple menu-hassle free, very fast service and cheap! The fish head, vegetable and drinks only cost RM25.00!

"Chow Park Kiuh" - Restaurant Aik Yuen (Non-Halal)

My sister has been bugging me to go try this "Chow Pek Kuih" at Restaurant Aik Yuen. So for the love of good food, I went on one Sunday night.

I was told "it's just behind Tawakal Hospital". What seemed to be pretty straight forward was indeed scary as I had to turn into some dark alley before seeing a bringly litted food stall with many people.

I was amazed.

For starters, we were recommended the fresh fish cake. Not too bad.

Then came the much publicised "Chow Pek Kiuh" - merely made of flour, sliced thinly about the length of your thumb, cooked in black sauce. I did not like it but it cannot be wrong as every table ordered.

Caution: Eat while hot, or else you would be eating rubber.

Next was "Chow La La". Nothing great, I prefer the one at Sea Park (have not blogged about it yet).

Then came "Fokkien Mee".

The home made chilli paste was-to-die-for. This goes well with any dish.

Overall, there was nothing much to shout about the food here. If you are curious about how famous the "Chow Pek Kiuh" is, drive to Hospital Tawakal in KL, turn right into a dark narrow alley after 7-Eleven.

Restaurant Chan Thoong Kee - Out of this world Hor Fun! (Non-Halal)

Sometimes, suprises are what you get when you least expect them. It was a case of the typical Hor Fun Noodle.

It is not the Hor Fun that was different, but the fresh prawn wanton and soup that rocked our appetite!

We walked in and it was damn obvious what should be ordered.

The famous Fung Wong biscuits here are also very in demand.

It is a food satisfaction guarantee to see so many writeups hung on the wall-of-fame.

Chicken Hor Fun noodle - fresh prawns, tasty chicken shred and delicious soup.

Wan Ton Hor Fun - Tasty fresh prawns wantons and delicious soup.

It is not the size but the content that matters, in this case.

It was too irresistable not to order additional fresh prawn wantons.

To cool us of our appetite, we ordered the soothing "Lor Hon Kor" drink which was served in a very creative manner. It had longans, Lo Hon Kor and Lemons in a mini pot - what a good blend!

I did not manage to try any biscuits but will surely be back for the Dry-Hor-Fun (saw the next table slurpping away, just short of eating the plate) and the freshly baked goodies.

Yut Kee Restaurant - "Pork Bread" anyone? (Non-Halal)

(The following post is a recommendation by fellow reader - SQ. Thank you for the
"porky" lunch experience!)

Yut Kee Restaurant is one of the busiest restaurant in KL. I have passed by this shop many times but I never knew they served among the most delicious choice of dishes.

Apparently, this restaurant has been in the news many times for its' wonderful home-baked cakes and highly rated dishes.

Do you still remember the cast "Kopitiam" sitcom? - They came, they tasted, they were photographed!

We did not have to wait long for our table but the queue was not getting any lesser by 1pm. Suprisingly, the turnover of crowd here is very fast. Just be patient, and you will be attended to pretty fast.

Yut Kee Restaurant serves a variety of dishes but we ordered what was highly recommended by SQ.

"Lam Mee" - It looked ordinary at first glance but it definately tasted good. The blend of various seafood and the gravy made the dish stand out from many versions of "Lam Mee" that was tasted before elsewhere.

"Chicken Chop" - How could this be any different right? Try it! The chicken is cooked very well and topped with gravy which makes you wanting to go for round 2.

"Pork bread" - This was the highlight of our lunch.

Let's start with the bread. The bread is coated with egg and cooked till golden brown.

The shredded pork (not pork floss) is used as the filing. The combination of the pork and the bread and the way it was prepared makes it deliciously addictive.

Directions: The restaurant is opposite Wilayah Complex (near Sogo) in KL. Park at the parking lots or else your car may get towed or summoned. For more accurate directions, call owner at 03-26988108.

Pig "Spare Parts" at Ah Heng Food Corner (Non-Halal)

We Malaysians love to eat especially the spare parts of the animals we eat daily. What used to be a delicacy is now a normal affair.

Ah Heng Food Corner promotes and embraces the love for pig "spare parts".

The most famous dish here is the pig's stomach or "G-thou" with a pepperish soup base. The slices of stomach given is suprisingly large and it is accompanied with chicken feet or "kai kiok".

Another specialty is the pig intestines with 3-layers-of pork. Equally huge and it makes every bite so fulfilling.

Other specialties also include wine chicken, curry chicken and etc.

Ah Heng Food Corner is tucked on a street corner along Jalan Tiong Nam, off Jalan Raja Laut. To get here, drive past Jalan Raja Laut. Turn into the junction directly opposite Bangunan PAS. You will not miss it as there are many side tables placed along the street.

Ah Heng Food Corner opens from 5pm till late.

Jalan Ipoh Prawn Noodle

Jalan Ipoh is well known for Bak Kut Teh and Dim Sum. I was doing some grocery shopping at The Store Jalan Ipoh and I stumbled upon a Prawn Mee stall ....... apparently patronised by MANY celebrities before!

The soup is out-of-this-world! It is tasty and not salty (unlike the one in Hor Yee Kee and Genting Klang version). I guess the only factor that differentiates all Prawn Noodles is the soup.

Generous amount of noodles and prawns were given. Most of the crowd here eats the large bowl, but since it was my virgin review here, better play safe than going to the toilet (you know what I mean).

Kate ordered Char Keoy Teow from a stall nearby. She gave two thumbs up for this. Sufficient ingredients given, she was happy.

Oh back to the celebrities. I only recognised Eric Tsang.

It was a hot affair. The "Lin Chee Kang" cooled us down.

If you wish to find this place, try to drive along Jalan Ipoh till you pass by ING office and when you see The Store supermarket. You will also be passing by many Bridal shops. This stall is located at the row of eateries in front of The Store.

Ipoh Road Hakka Yong Tau Fu

Everyone is familier with Yong Tau Fu. It's even on wikipedia!

I was at Bdr Sri Damansara area looking to fill my stomach till I came across this growing franchise. I have been to the Titiwangsa and Rawang outlet. Both did not go well with my taste buds, but hey, I decided to give it a 3rd try (much regretted).

I am not complaining about the service or cleaniness but the food, particularly the fish paste. The paste just did not reach the expectation level....shouldn't it be tangy at every bite? The other thing was the gravy. Just don't know why it's not soup based but thick-gravy based. Haiyoh!

The "Shui Kow" or friend dumplings used the same paste, so needless to say, it was a turn off too.

The fish balls are the ultimate test to the fish paste. It was much better than the one I had in Ampang Yong Tau Fu, but still could not beat Wah Kiow Yong Tau Fu.

Side dishes are available. I ordered "chi pau kai" or Paper Wrapped Chicken. This one tasted good. They should focus more on the chicken than the fish-pasted-dishes.

Here is a price list taken from kyspeaks.com. KY seems to think otherwise on the food.

Although it was not fulfilling Saturday lunch, I think some things just can't be duplicated or franchised. Just keep it original. People will go all the way to eat wherever they smell or read about good reviews.

Gen Japanese Buffet @ The Legend Hotel, KL

I love buffets. You pay and stuff yourself with food all night long. You enjoy the taste of the first few dishes and the rest are just to make up for the amount you paid - "eat lah, pay already what".

Kate and I went to Gen Japanese Restaurant at The Legend Hotel, KL as we were craving for Japanese Food. Gen has the reputation fo the Longest Buffet Dinner, which I think it should have better been referred to as Longest SERVING Buffet Dinner. Apparently, this buffet was so in demand that it has been available forever!

Gen Japanese Restaurant happens to be on the 10th Floor of Legend Hotel and it offers a nice view of the city. So remember to request for the city view when making reservations.

The place wasn't fully booked but the crowd were very obvious hotel guest (with their room slippers) and friends who gathered to have a great time.

The buffet section which was the center of attraction was definitely the "cold" dishes. The typical dishes were available: salmon, tuna, tako, oysters. One thing about the Oysters, although it is not as gigantic as the ones in Lemon Garden or Jogoya, it is fresh and fits the mouth.

Next was the Teppenyaki section. Reasonable spread of dishes but due to the lack of chefs, the poor dude had to cook as fast as he could to serve the long queue. Because of this, my Seafood Teppanyaki tasted very plain.

The tempura range was disappointing. Only prawns and vegetables. What happen to mushrooms? squid? fish? Damn!

I was full by now.

The Miso soup was suprisingly good.

Unagi was good. The rest was lousy.

More side dishes .... nothing much to brag about.

Ahhh ..... the desserts nailed the whole entire buffet session. The red bean macha ice-cream was very good. The selection and variety of cakes was awesome. The "tong shui" which is made out of longan, grass jelly and er...er...can't remember the name of it, was so good that everyone was eyeing on this. Luckily I sat the closes to the pot.

Summary: It was a nice dinner with great views. I did not expect anything more than a great company. All that damage for RM69++ per pax.

Lin Yuan Steamboat Kitchen (Non-Halal)

Restaurant owners are getting more creative these days, and Malaysian's love creativity in their food.

I was at Lin Yuan Steamboat Kitchen at Cheras Queenspark to try the talked-about Pumpkin Porridge Steamboat.

Lin Yuan is located amongst many other steamboat restaurants in this area. The others (meaning next door and nearby) does not seem to be that much of an attraction.

This place is crowded. I had to wait a while before getting a table.

You will be given a few options as your soup base. Since I was here to satisfy my curiosity, I chose only the pumpkin porridge base.

It is easy to make your selections here with a pictured menu. Choose your sets and choose your add-ons.

The pork ball is a must try. It has a kind of salty, porky filing inside when you bite them. So satisfying!

The other must add-on is this pork + fish paste (i think). Just scoop the portion and size you want and cook it. It's like wanton, but so much better!

The sourish and spicy chilli rocks!

Apparently, to begin your steamboat fiesta, you need to add the eggs first. Normally, I only add them towards the end.

We were told the eggs actually makes the pumpkin porridge soup taste much better. Don't care la, whatever he said must be true.

This steamboat session turned out better than expected. The porridge was not too thick nor too watery. Just nice and the taste of all the ingredients thrown in really made the whole dish taste out-of-this-world, for a moment.

After going for a few rounds, got a little bloated. But if you like to try new things, do try the steamboat here. The service is suprisingly efficient.

Wah Kiow Hakka Yong Tau Fu (Non-Halal)

Having tried so many Yong Tau Fu places, Wah Kiow Yong Tau Fu (in my opinion) uses one of the most original ingredients.

According to the restaurant owner who has been operating here in Jalan Peel, Cheras for the past 20 years, Wah Kiow fish paste is what makes every bite different. It is made of fresh "sai-to" fish with added salted fish and some family secret recipe.

Wah Kiow is located along Jalan Peel, tucked along some wooden/zinc roof shop lot.

There is nothing spectacular among the menu except the fish balls and fish paste are made of 99% "sai-to" fish. I asked Wah Kiow owner how different would that be. He says, "some places uses a mixture of fish, which cost cheaper, which also makes the it taste powdery".

True enough! Ampang Yong Tau Fu's paste does taste a little powdery. Although I use to eat there, it seems the crowd has been lesser.

The famous franchised Hakka Yong Tau Fu (found in Bdr Sri Damansara, Selayang, Rawang and etc) is no where close to how delicious these Yong Tau Fu in Wah Kiow taste.

Apart from serving Yong Tau Fu, Wah Kiow also serves some delicious side dishes like curry chicken (according to the next table, the side dishes are equally good).

Something is different about this Wanton Noodle

Somehow it's true. I have to agree with fellow floggers who gave two thumbs up for the wanton noodle at Hung Kee Restaurant.

Tucked along a row of old shoplots along Jalan Loke Yew, you will find Hung Kee occupying 2 shoplots (1 with ac and 1 w/o ac).

The crowd seems to pour in at any hour of the day, mainly for the Wanton Noodles.

I hearsay that the noodles are homemade and fresh. The thick black sauce used (which seems ordinary by the naked eye) enhances the taste and aroma of the whole dish.

Do not underestimate the "small" serving of each plate as it can be quite feeling. You have a choice of the ordinary topping (char siew) or you may choose "siew yuk", "siew ngap" and etc. I'd say stick to the original "char siew".

The servings here are also very generous. The proportion of ingredients are satisfactory and the wantons are the "killers". It's so porkly that I hardly tasted prawn meat inside. Unfortunately, I was too slow in taking the wanton photos as it went straight in the mouth.

If you have the appetite and wish to try, go for the additional order of "shui kao" or dumpling.

Can't you see how worthwhile each dumpling is? The "shui kao" is porky and fullfiling.

If you decide not to eat in, you can always take-away. It's funny as they don't give you your take-away order in the usual way (transparent plastic). Its wrapped like nasi lemak style complete with the chilli (it was damn good), wanton and noodles.

It taste even better eaten at home.

Caution: Been here a few times, make sure you repeat yourself with your orders. One outing I had which I ordered wanton noodle "tambah shui kao", it came without the wanton.

Oh yea, they also serve other dishes like chicken/duck rice, fried noodles and etc.

Directions: Get onto Jln Loke Yew, Cheras. It is opposite the DBKL flats (yellow and maroon colored), right under the overhead bridge. Not sure about business hours but can try from 10am - 7pm.

It is hard to notice this restaurant which is hidden behind the streets of Jalan Pahang, KL.

Restaurant Hokkaido is brightly litted and displays a huge variety of fresh seafood, but not at an affordable price. Yes, it caters mainly to ang mohs and tourist that pack this place becuase it is situated near various 3 star hotels.

Of the 3 dishes that we ordered, the prawns were the best. Not only was it fresh, it was huge too! The soup tasted good and we are ready for more.

Then came the crabs. It was disappointing. The crabs were not really well prepared ... the crab meat was still soft and sticky. Yucky!

Although the gravy was nicely prepared, it did not complement the so-called-half-cooked crabs.

The best I think is always the "green". They can never go wrong with the "greens". This dissapointing dinner cost RM 78.30. Giving them the benefit of doubt, other seafood could have been better prepared.

Pulau Ketam (just heavenly crabs!)

Last weekend, Kate and I went to Pulau Ketam for 2 reasons:

1) Visit her grandparents
2) Was craving for a fresh, big and cheap meal of crabs

(Fully air-conditioned ferry, half leather seats with in-house DVD entertainment)

Here is how you get to Pulau Ketam. Drive along Federal Highway and follow the sign "Pulau Ketam Jetty".

(It is not a rubbish bin. Traders are transporting seafood and other items from/to jetty)

There is ample parking space at the jetty. Walk to the jetty and wait for the ferry. (Ladies, bring along the necessities to protect yourself from the sun)

(No seats available at Port Klang Jetty. Boat arrives every 45 minutes. YES! Thats how long we waited)

It takes about 45 minutes to reach Pulau Ketam but it is worth the wait, just keep thinking about oversized crabs and really cheap seafood.

It cost RM 7.00 for a one-way trip. You can buy your tickets on the ferry. The last ferry that leaves Pulau Ketam is 5.30pm.

I am suprised that even after the recent ferry incident which claimed a few lives, we were all still not asked to put on the lifejackets and worst still, no one demostrated the usage of such life saving floats (touch wood) should anything happen.

I tried removing a life jacket from the tray above us, but after several attempts of pulling and pushing it, the life jacket was still hanging on tightly to the tray. KNN ... what kind of safety is this?!

While I wasn't entirely happy with the life jackets, I was happy to know that we would be entertained (for at least 45 minutes) with some latest movies played on the in-house Cinema.

And guess what! ..... It was karaoke ..... karaoke in Hokkien! Wah lau ... tears nearly fell from my eyes. Here is a short video of what I had to watch for at least 30 mins:

Anyway, back to my topic, I survived 30 mins of Hokkien karaoke and was eager to leave the ferry when it arrived at Pulau Ketam.

While I was younger (yeah...donkey years ago), Pulau Ketam's road were not made of bricks but only on wood and many cockle shells. The villagers travel via bicycle or walk within the island.

It was rather quite becuase we reached about 3.30pm. It is usually crowded during public holidays and lunch hour on weekends. Many tourist and food lovers visit Pulau Ketam for the fresh-iest seafood and WHAT ELSE? .... CRABS LOR!

Along the entrance of Pulau Ketam, you can buy all sorts of dried seafood. Many people mostly buy FRESH seafood home. You will notice it when you see them packed in white ice-boxes and a smile on their face.

There is even a tourist guide.

There are many restaurants in Pulau Ketam. Eating at the wrong one would spoil your day. Restaurant Kim Hoe is highly recommended. If you come during holidays to eat at Kim Hoe without reservations, you would end up waiting for hours (I SWEAR!).

Since it was neither lunch or dinner, we ordered 3 dishes. We ordered the "siong tong la la". This la la was really huge and needless to say, definately fresh-ier than the ones I had in KL.

Then came the fish ball soup. Nothing special but the fish ball was fresh and delicious.

Finally the dish of the day was the crabs.

The yummiest crabs ever! Big, full of meat and fresh. What else can I say?

We left Pulau Ketam full of satisfaction and were already thinking of the next trip with a bigger appetite.

Festival of BALLS

It was a weekend to feast BECAUSE it was "Tung Zhi" or "Winter Solstice Festival".

Kate's mom is a great cook. She whipped up a feast for the family and she also made the biggest BALLS a.k.a "Tong Yuen" is have ever placed in my mouth. It was so yummy!

Did you ever wonder the origins of such BALLS?

"Tung Zhi" is the thanksgiving festival of the Chinese calendar. It means “the arrival of winter”. It is an occasion for the family to get together to celebrate the good year they have had WHICH IS ALSO a reason to eat!!

"Tong Yuen" is a sweet gingerish soup of glutinous rice flour balls. Eating "Tong Yuen" symbolises family unity and prosperity.

Restaurant Loong Kee, KL

The streets are quiet at night opposite GH (General Hospital) but right opposite it, there is a restaurant which is always packed with food lovers.

Yes, Restaurant Loong Kee.

The seats are all placed by the walkway so bare in mind that the only smell of fresh air is the car fumes and good food, of course.

We were recommended to try this dish. No regrets! Generous amount of salted egg yoke is cooked with "shokolingam" mantis prawn to perfection.

It was mouth watering and we topped up another big bowl of rice to go with this dish.

Another recommended dish is the pork ribs ... can't remember the name of the dish but it was coated and cooked with a very tasteful sauce, never tasted anywhere else before! Don't miss out this dish!

As always, the "greens" as advised.

It was a satisfying dinner for 2 but at RM 38.90, I thought it was a bit pricey. Will I return? Hell yeah!

BAD Kut Teh - Restaurant Sem Kim, Jalan Ipoh

I love pork. Period.

Sem Kim is one of my most patrionized BKT outlet but of late, quality is an issue.

Sem Kim used to be my favourite late night supper spot with some friends. The BKT soup was irresistable, but not of late.

Somehow it is no match to Restaurant Ban Lee.

(The "yau char kueh" is as hard as a rock. Avoid this at all cost)

(The hot pot style keeps the soup hot for only 1 minute. What a waste of time)

My BKT menu is always the usual combo of 3 parts:

1) G chang - I think its the thigh meat (minus the fat? HOW CAN!?)
2) G dou - Stomach (sliced very thin so you don't get the satisfaction)
3) G cheung - Intestines (very pepper-rish)

Of course, the "greens" again for a perceived balanced diet. It is oily so please tell them to put less oil and minus the onion toppings (it does not taste fresh).

Oh well, after that dinner, I bid farewell to Sem Kim for the last time.

Jolin Tsai concert (PART 2) - Showtime..ZZzz

Concerts I have attended, although not many. After every concert, I will always ask myself the 1 million dollar question:

WAS IT WORTH IT? Just this time, HELL NO!

Last weekend, me and thousands of others watched a Taiwanese superstar perform live on stage.

Expectations were high and emotions were wild when she appeared before our eyes (not me but the bunch of people around me).

So she sang, danced and shook her bootie glaringly in front of VIP seat "suckers". It was what anyone would expect from any performence right?

Somehow, a few of us did not feel "turned on". There was nothing special, REALLY, except for her XXXS clothes.

The funniest part I recalled was she dressed in black, looked ready to belt out a techno-cum damn sentimental song but sang a fast-tempo-kiddy song. MCH .... nearly gave me a heart attack. Apalar ... dress to the music la puhleaseeee!

I was really dissapointed at this point as my hard earned money was just to watch her move/jump around the stage singing a few of the hit songs for 1 1/2 hour only.

For the record, this is shortest concert ever. Even when perverts shouted "ENCOREeee ....ENCOREee....", she came back to sing one song, waved goodbye and left. The band then immediately packed their stuff .... WHY? Rushing ah? Scared miss flight is it?

To add on to my frustration was these bunch of EXTREMELY DEDICATED and RESPONSIBLE underaged security people. All they do is walk up to your face (if so happen you were trying to take a picture), and flash you these UGLY signs:

They were so busy walking up and down giving you the "SIGN" but thousands of camera flashes were flashing away ... "yeh-nah-dehhhh".

So Kate and I left the hall, walked around and decided to redeem our concert tickets.

Although we did not leave with the exact redemption, it was good enough to cover our supper and quarter of the price we paid for our concert tickets ..... at least, it felt more satisfying then watching her sing.

With that, JT concerts are in my BANNED list.

Jolin Tsai concert (PART 1) - Restaurant Seafood Yoong Kie, Goh Tong Jaya

It was my 3rd visit to Restaurant Seafood Yoong Kie. I would say this place serves the BEST bullfrog dish EVER!

So 2 thumbs up to the chef that "whooped" up such a marvelous dinner.

(This IS NOT the chef, but for illustration purposes only)

I only stumbled upon Yoong Kie by luck amongst the other 15 seafood restaurants on a one-way street in Goh Tong Jaya.

I have not tried the others because Yoong Kie always make me come back for more. The friendly staffs and generous portion of serving is well worth every trip.

We were recommended to try to the "Kiung Chung San G" or wild boar meat fried with ginger and spring onions.

We were expecting the meat to be like chewing gum but turned out the meat was tenderly rough (got such a word ah?) and tasty!

Next, "Kiung Yeung Tin Kai" or Bullfrog cooked in ginger (yeah ... lotsa ginger).

The bullfrog's meat is soooooo ... soooo .... yummy and fresh! The meat is like fish meat - soft and succulent, not to mention the meat is HUGE!

Last but not least, the must have "greens".

The bill came to RM 67.00 for 2 pax. It is really worth the trip to dine with the cool breezy weather in Goh Tong Jaya. Stay tuned for Jolin Tsai concert (PART 2) as I review a below-expectation concert by a hot chick from Taiwan.

I love Decembers.

It is month of where people buy things that you don't need and hardly use. We are such discount suckers!

December is also month of celebration. Everyone will find a reason to celebrate just about anything like Sultan of Selangor's Birthday (its a public holiday) - Selangor folks celebrate, friends from abroad return - friends celebrate, Mega Sale - malaysians celebrate, Christmas - Cina, Melayu, Indian and Lain Lain celebrate, dog gave birth - the bitches celebrate, no electricity - nearby housing area celebrates, flash floods - those not affected celebrate. Isn't it so much fun?

For me, I wish the month of December has 62 days. There is always something to look forward to and I have even put up a short Christmas wish list, unlike those kiasu kiasi fellas who write down 20 items in their list. That is not a wish list, its is a dream-on or go-fly-kite kinda list.

Anyway, here are my top 3.

1) A digital camera

2) A PSP (Pretty Sony Past-time machine)

3) A holiday trip to Hong Kong (can't they find some hot chicks like Girl No. 16 to promote Hong Kong instead of the elderly hongkees above?) Sigh ....

Well, I am already busy working on this list and I hope 2007 will end with a ba-da-bam!

The last time I glued myself to the TV to watch a game show was donkey years ago, watching Wheel of Fortune over TV3. I thought those were the days where you watch a tall-forever-smiling lady walking up and down flipping lightboxes filled with letters.

Lately, I caught a glimpse of Deal or No Deal and girl No.16.

Then while I was updating my blog, and checking out other bloggers, I came across a link to Girl No. 16's friendster. Right on busy-body-mode, I click to double check.

Oh yes...it was Girl No. 16. While "checking her out", I noticed the whole world were her friends! 7961 FRIENDS? KNN...sure bohhh?????

Then, I looked around and viewed some pictures. I tell you .... it was cleavage-hazzard at the highest level!

Ladies, this is dummies-guide-to-flaunting-what-you-have. Men, wipe that saliva off your mouth!

While going through more of her pictures, I began to realise Girl No. 16 is surely a succesful and a highly in-demand model.

She is also a model for a BOOB advertisement.

Black, smelly, ugly ... but delicious

Is it really true that the Chinese is good at eating and they eat almost everything under the sun? I think of Bak Kut Teh and we savour all the "spare parts", think of chicken also the chinese "wallup" all the liver and heart.

We are so good at eating not to mention even an egg that is in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, lime and rice straw for several weeks. Yes, I am talking about the century egg of better known as "Phei Than".

I love eating "Phei Tan". The egg yolk has a creamy, strong aroma and an almost cheese-like flavor. The egg white pulak has a gelatinous texture similar to cooked egg white, but has very little taste. Best eaten with pickled ginger. "Shokolingam"!

There is a myth that says century eggs were prepared by soaking eggs in horse urine. How creative can that be? Off all urine, why the horse? Why not the pig? or Donkey? Well, I googled it at it seems to be a persistent myth with no evidence, but what the heck, it still taste good irregardless of where it came from.

I was craving for a dose of "Phei Tan" so I walked over to the nearest Giant and bought a pack of 4 (about RM5.00). It is more expensive than the ones that I normally get from the weekend wet market. The quality and taste is much better than the ones in Giant.

Anyway, to eat this weird-looking-but-delicious-at-the-same-time egg, you must 1st wash off all the dirt and then crack it like how you eat a hard boiled egg.

Once finished, it will look something like that.

It may not look appetizing but BELIEVE me .... it will only taste better in your mouth!

It is hard to slice it with the ordinary knife, therefore you can consider using a thread, YES, a thread to cut the "Phei Tan".

Chill it for a while and savour it. It's the best snack ever when you are hungry. Be sure to wash your mouth with mouthrinse or else others will die smelling your breath! Don't say I didn't tell you.

"Shokolingam" Frog Porridge + Wong Ah Wah bbq chicken wings

I have been to this place many times. The only specialty they have here is the spicy-hot-yummilicious-frog-porridge!

This stall is located in Jalan Alor. You will not miss it as it is towards the tail-end of the street.

While waiting for the frog porridge to be served, be sure to try the Wong Ah Wah "Siew Khai Yiek" or BBQ chicken wings (located at the end of Jalan Alor).

The "kung poh" style frog is eaten with porridge. If you can't eat spicy, be sure to tell them or else you will end up with Angelina Jolie lips! If you do not utter anything, its is by default spicy. You can also choose to order the ginger frog version but it is nothing compared to the spicy version.

The porridge served is tastless. You would need to mix it with the "kung poh" frog gravy.

The "Kung Poh" frog gravy is a mixture of lotsa oyster sauce and grinded chilli.

The frog's meat is tender and juicy. It is also huge, like a chicken wing! Hahaha .... It makes it even easier and more fulfilling to eat!

Frog porridge for 2 is RM 28.00. Business starts from 6pm till late. Be sure to load yourself with lotsa tissue paper ... hahahaha.

Kampachi, Pavillion KL

One can never be bored on the variety of food that you can find in Pavillion KL. There are plenty of makan-makan options on the LG Floor and 6th Floor. If you are looking for Japanese food (reasonably priced with very attentive service), try Kampachi.

The menu is not as extensive as any other Japanese restaurants but good enough to make you drool.

Sashimi is a must-lah for me. So my options were pretty limited therefore I ordered the Sashimi Set (RM 40.00).

Gave it a good mixture, and it looks as good as a salad.

I have to comment about the service here. Kate and I were very satisfied by the attentive waiters. They treat you like you are eating is a "5 star" restaurant ..... they even pour the soy sauce for you before you eat! Hahaha ... now that's a first for me!

The desserts were very tempting. We tried Macha Ice-Cream special (RM 16.00).

It comes with fresh strawberries, sweeetttt green tea ice-cream, red beans and (the best part) with "mochi"!

I definately recommend this place. For RM 101.20, it was a worthwhile and fulfilling dinner for 2.

Kampachi is located on Level 6, Pavillion KL. (After this, Kate and I are craving for a session of Japanese Buffet!)

A lousy lousy lousy shopping experience

A continuation from Food, Shopping and "Lucky" on a Saturday.

I enjoy shopping but I hate bad shopping experiences. This is one of it.

I received an invitation form HSBC to attend a pre-sale last Friday (30th Nov). I really wanted to go but work has been keeping me busy all month! It was really exciting to see so many branded goods going for such a good bargain so I decided to go with Kate on Saturday (1st Dec).

We arrived at the warehouse location in a hotel lobby at 3.30pm. The emotions and expectations were high. Cash and Credit Cards were "locked-&-loaded". Bloody hell, reach only must line up like prisoners.

Security was so tight that even an ant would not be able to cross the hall. Anyway, in the spirit and mood for great bargains, we waited patiently about 30 mins. Line by line, queue by queue until it was our turn.

Like I said earlier, it was tight security. We were only shopping for clothes, not jewellary! Need or not to put all handbangs in a tightly tied up frosted plactic bag?

After stepping in, all expectations went down the "longkang besar". How I wished next time you put up a note in your ad to say that "Mostly women wear, shoes and accesories that are out of fashion on sale. Men, don't bother cause products are limited and you will want to leave in 5 mins."

It was crowded. I took one glance at colours of clothings that are as good as faded. Ladies purse that has only 2 or 3 choices. Watches that were beyond the current trend. Jeans that are limited in size, only for people aged 16 or 56.

So please lah, make life easier for all of us. Be a bit specific in your ads. With that, do you think I will ever return? I shall let you answer that.

Summary, one lousy over-advertised warehouse sale. I only stayed for about 15 mins and I left without turning back except I gave a cock-stare to a b***ch who uttered "Hello sir, are you paying?" TNS, do I look like I bought anything?

"Shokolingam" chicken rice!

This is the food review following-up from my previous post on Food, Shopping and "Lucky" on a Saturday.

When I go to Sungei Wang (pronouced as Soong-ngai Whang), 9 out of 10 times I will eat at Restaurant Teo Chew Chicken Rice. Yea, crazy right? What's so great? The chicken got "gold" ah?

I have been visiting this restaurant since my secondary school days, yeah so, its been here for more than 13 years! The food, quality and taste is amazingly still the same!

(I am so excited at this point that I am drooling about the chicken rice)

The constant craving to come back again and again to this restaurant is mainly because of:
(1) The way the chicken is deliciously prepared
(2) The sauce that goes with the chicken
(3) The chicken-based-soup (free-flow, self service)
(4) MOST IMPORTANTLY, "da" chilli sauce!

This is "da" chilli sauce. Your chicken rice will not be complete without it.

My food instinct tells me that "da" chilli sauce has a good blend of garlic, red chilli padi, green chilli padi, lotsa young fresh ginger and a balanced amount of vinegar.

This is how I eat it. When the bowl of hot soup is served, add a little chilli sauce into the soup. Stir it and sip the soup from the bowl ......... and "burpppp". Now that's doing justice the chilli and the soup! Feel free to refill your soup. The staffs here are pretty busy, so you can self-service. When you do so, you can scoup more wintermelons and chicken from the hot pot of soup.

Having the right chilli sauce is not enough. The chicken (roasted or steamed, kampong or the usual commercial chicken) is well prepared. I normally go for the roasted chicken. A slight salty taste of the gravy enhances your every bite and when complimented with "da" chilli sauce, you have a "shokolingam" bite of chicken rice every spoon of the way!

The proportion of chilli vs chicken is 40% chilli on 60% slice of chicken.

The generous portion of chicken served is satisfactory. I can normally "wallup" 2 plates of rice with 1 serving of chicken. You can also order tauge (nothing to shout about) and other "spare parts" of the chicken like gizzard (khai khan) which is neatly sliced into small pieces topped with a slight amount of pepper and spring onions.

A meal for 2 cost RM 12.88

Since this restaurant is linked to the teppanyaki restaurant, you can order your choice of teppanyaki and deserts (the famous dessert is the Fuji Snow - it is ais kacang but with a lot of ingredients served with a tall/huge amount of shaved ice).

Located on the 3rd floor of Sungei Wang, it is tucked in a corner next to Teppanyaki. It is oppossite some travel agencies and at the border of BB Plaza. Confused? Just take the escalator to the 3rd Floor, walk straight, its on your right.

Food, Shopping and "Lucky" on a Saturday

It was a busy Saturday.

1. Had lunch with Kate at Teo Chew Chicken Rice - Sungei Wang Plaza.

2. Went to FJ Benjamin's warehouse sale. (Lousy, lousy, lousy!)

3. Bought tickets to Leo Ku's "Magic Moments 2007" concert

4. New pairs of jeans (after almost 2 years) at Topshop - Pavillion Mall, KL.

5. Dinner at Kampachi - Pavillion Mall, KL.

When I crave for home cooked food, I will think of Ming Chuen Kee @ Sec. 17, PJ. You really need to have patience if you want to eat here. It takes a while before you food is served therefore if you are in a rush or extremely hungry, you are advised to "stay cool".

When we were younger ....

I attended VV's pre-school graduation gala some weeks ago with Kate. It was all fun and laughter seeing the kids enjoying themselves and performing. We had a great time and I was so busy taking photos and videos of these bunch of kids. Looking back at these photos actually made me think back about being younger ...... (excuse me, not that I am very old!).

Being around kids is fun. There are less complicated than we are. They do and say things that you least expect and although it does not make any sense, we still laugh about it.

Looking at the whole bunch of photos I took during the gathering of these "mischievous" bunch, I suddenly had the urge to look back in time. So I search high-and-low for my library of photos and found a picture of myself, almost 22 years ago, in Genting Highlands! Wah lau ... I had no recollection of this at all!

I laughed as I went through the rest of the pictures. It's just so nice to stop and go back in time. Take it slow and have a nice day.

I needed to get my one and only watch fixed. It feels weird walking around with a watch which shows the same time throughout the day. So I changed the battery and got the techinician to clean my watch.

Finally, I can tell the time!

Since it was nearby, I went to collect my tickets.

On the way, I stopped by a Mahjong shop. I have been searching for a mahjong table for weeks and most tables I saw were quite "ciplak". So I asked around until my friend - DC told me "a mahjong table is an investment. You must buy the high-end-auto-arrange kinda table. Then you can win more."

"Nahhhh..."

Anyway, I googled his suggestion and guess what I found:

My car finally hit "puberty" stage. It clocked 100,000 km and according the "guidelines", some major spare-part-partying needed to be done, so I payed RM 1,350 to celebrate.

Bak Kut Teh - Restaurant Ban Lee, Jalan Ipoh

I was deciding either Bak Kut Teh or "dai-chow" for dinner. Finally I decided on Bak Kut Teh. It has been quite a while since I visited Restaurant Ban Lee at Jalan Ipoh.

This place is famous for its charcoal cooked Bak Kut Teh. Business hours start from evening till about 3am. It is more crowded after midnight than during dinner time!

Anyway, for 2 pax, this is what we ate for RM 28.60

The soup was really good. Not too salty or porky. The meat was tender and soft with fair amounts of "fat" or "fei-yok".

Parking is a problem here. You either park in-front of the shop (with yellow lines) and look out for Police (the police station is just opposite!) OR park and walk about 2 mins aways. If you go late (like I did at 10pm), some of the "organs" will be finished.

Umai-Ya Japanese Restaurant

I decided to treat myself to a Japanese Buffet lunch today after the agonizing therapy session with PE (after results as expected according to her). Kate and I went to Umai-Ya Japanese Restaurant in Damansara Utama. The buffet is only available from 11.30am - 2.30pm on weekends.

We reached at 12.30noon. Walked in and we were ushered to our table. (Do call for reservations to avoid disappointment)

The ambience and setting is very relaxing and soothing. Only one thing kept me puzzled ... How can a Japanese buffet on a Sunday afternoon be so quiet? There were 2 floors and the amount the tables occupied is only a handful. Funny right?

The assorted Sashimi was fresh and it was served in a generous cut size.

We were recommended to try this dish - fried unagi with tamagoyaki or egg omellete. We couldn't tell if it was really good because we were quite full when this dish was served.

Damn kau "hum". This is miso soup with a variety of mushrooms and salmon.

Overall, the buffet selection is not as extensive as Rakuzen, but good enough to have to you enjoy a good spread of Japanese dishes. Just remember that dishes are served in a slower manner therefore, you may have to wait. Service is good and if you have HSBC Credit Card, there is an additional 10 -15% discount on ala-carte orders.

A paracetamolic for the past 5 years

Yes, I am referring to the simple painkilling medicine used to relieve mild to moderate pain. It's temporary but effective, not until recently since my threshold for pain has lessened. But before I proceed further, I want to extend my gratitude towards the creaters of PANADOL.

"You have always been there for me every step of the way since in joined the workforce. Although I do not agree with your pricing (which is bloody expensive for a pack of Actifast 48 tablets), but your distribution of product is excellent! I have purchased it at mamak stalls, petrol station, magazine stalls and cigarette kiosk - by the road side. I only wished you put more innovation into your product line. You may consider introducing different flavors or different attractive colour tablets for different levels of pain. Your previous product innovations from the ordinary pills to Actifast was a great milestone for me. Your consistent marketing/advertising efforts have also coverted me into a loyal consumer and everytime when my head spins, I think of you. Finally, from all the organs of my body, I wish to say Thank You."

Many people around me disagree with my habit of popping pills (paracetamol) whenever I have a headache. Honestly, I do value your concerns and hear you most of the time but I can't help it. The pain bothers the hell out of me and it spoils my whole day.

I was told that taking too much paracetamol will damage your liver - I agree.
I read that drinking 1 or 2 can of isotonic drinks or mixing it with water will help balance the electron/Ion imbalance in the brain - Tried, tested and disagree!
I also tried submerging my feet in a basin of warm water - Tried, tested and disagree!

Don't laugh. Now, any other funny suggestions?

So do I have an option? Previously - no, NOW - YES (I hope). My colleague recommended me to try Lymphatic Therapy, layman terms means a massage performed by a lymphatic drainage therapist.

So I went to Plaza Mont Kiara for my 2pm appointment. P*****E, my alternative answer to my headache, greeted me with a big smile and we started chatting.

PE: Ok, tell me your problem.
AG: Headache lor...
PE: I see, how frequent?
AG: At least once a week
PE: You are not as bad as my client, a lady which consumes up to 8 panadols a day.
AG: (MCH, got people take 8 a day ah? kow kow man!)
PE: Ok, for today, I shall do a lymphatic drainage massage for you and this treatment may have to be done for a few weeks. Some people may feel better immediately and some may only see results gradually.
AG: Ok.

(Entered the therapy room. I see a bed and towels)

PE: Take off your clothes and lie face down.
AG: Top half only right?
PE: Top half, bottom half and your underwear.
AG: (Blushing)... Err... Ok.

The therapy went on for about 90 minutes. During the 90 minutes, it felt like I was being butchered by two chefs who was preparing dinner. It was a bittttt painful and soar.

So when I returned home, I wanted to wash off the lotion that was all over me. I looked into the mirror.

Niameh ... like I got runned over by a motorcycle. Better still, after a close analysis again, it looked like this.

PE: Next week same time, same day ok?
AG: Errr...Ok..but same thing?
PE: Yeah. But will include Acupuncture.
AG: Needles??!! Pain ah?
PE: Very small needles, like ant bites.
AG: Really? Poke where?
PE: Around your head
AG: Ok. How much for today's therapy?
PE: RM 120.00
AG: Thank you.
PE: See you next week.

I ended my therapy session feeling a lot lighter on my shoulders, neck and head. I was told I had a lot of wind and heat.

While writting this blog, my back feels like an after effect of sunburn. Ouchhh....!

The happy thoughts about not going to work for a day does not seem to last long. I always wished that I could have an uninterrupted day to myself .... no phone calls, no office emails, no errants to run and all I do is laze around the house the whole day glueing myself to the endless variety of channels on Astro.

But...I already have a list of things to do.

Like all men, I give my car a lot of attention. I am never late for a scheduled service (this time I am). My appointment tomorrow is at 8.15am. I have to be kiasu because everytime I service my car, it would take about half-a-day (hope to get it done by 12 noon) and if you are #32, your car will be ready by 6pm.

I will be going to collect the Jolin Tsai concert tickets (which is way overdue).

I would have to make a trip to LVMH at Central Plaza to get my watch fixed. As you can see, my watch stopped on 19th Nov 2007 at 8.45am. I love this watch, my only watch.

At this moment, I am researching on how to create a forum for the condo that I am staying now. Why? Tell you later. Let me go figure out how rocket science is it to create a forum.

Mizu Japanese Fine Dining - TTDI Plaza

I had lunch at Mizu today. It was my first visit here.

The restaurant was nicely decorated. This is the picture of the entrance.

While I ordered my set lunch, "starters" were served. It is a dish with a combination of boiled eggs, mashed potatos and some "greens".

The set lunch I ordered comes with Chawanmushi. As usual, I ate everything then thought of taking photos. Everyone knows about this Japanese Steamed Egg Custard. It was soft and smooth unlike those that I have eaten before.

Next came Eihire. It is a salty deep-fried stingray served with some kind of sweet mayonnaise. Yummy! Not many Japanese restaurants actually serves this.

Then came the Assorted Sashimi Set. The slices of the fish were generously big.

I was recommended to try Fois Gras Daikon.

I preferred the one served at Cafe-Cafe.

Within the set lunch was a fruit desert (topped with sago). Yummy!

Overall: It was a nice place to have a quiet lunch but suprisingly it was kinda empty during lunch time.

...cook of course. Got home early today and was not too keen of eating out, so I whipped out the food I bought from the Air Panas market last Sunday.

So I managed to cook up 5 dishes + 1 soup, for 2 pax.

The soup picture is missing. Drank most of it before I could take a photo.

(1) Fried cabbage with dried prawns and garlic. (Must have "greens").

(2) Steamed Ikan Bawal Putih (topped with red/green chili padi, garlic, onions and ginger)

(3) Ketchup prawns with garlic and onions

(4) Steamed egg roll with fish paste

(5) Fried prawns (simple yet delicious!)

I was in need of ink for my printer and if you did not know, printer cartridges are not cheap. For my Canon's, it ranges from RM 55 - RM 70 for black and coloured "liquid".

So i decided to go "green". Refill and not discart my old cartridges. Cartridge World is located in SS2. Refills are close to half the price of buying a new one.

They will refill and test your cartridges and show you the printout. I was a happy customer who walked away paying a bill of RM 170 (4 cartridge refills) vs RM 280 (if I were to buy new ones).

So I kinda saved my money and the environment. How about that?

Yes. Believe it or not, it was my first time.

Visiting K.K, on business not holiday.

No-frills flight is really boring.

I checked in at Radius International Hotel in KK. This hotel is only a few months old. It's located above Warisan Square, a trendy shopping mall. Thank god for that I found my Starbucks!

This "boutech" hotel concept is interesting.

Comfy bed and in-your-face plasma TV.

Open your window and you have "wah-laa" ... landscapping!

The morning before I left K.K, I walked nearby from the hotel to a corner shoplot to try the Kuching Laksa.

It is indeed different from the normal laksa. This one has an undescribed delicious taste of curry and prawns. Really worth my RM 4.00.

Dinner at Ming Chuen Kee Seafood, Seks. 17, PJ

I have visited this restaurant a few times and I finally remembered to take pictures this time. This restaurant serves delicious home cooked food and is normally packed from 7pm - 9pm daily. A lot of students and working adults do come here for dinner thanks to the variety of dishes and seafood offered.

It was a simple dinner with Kate, so we ordered 3 dishes.

"Something-close-to-Marmite-pork-ribs"

"Si-yau-ha" or soya souce prawns

And for a well balanced dinner, the vegetable must be in the menu. Steamed "kai-lan" with anchovies.

If you are familer with PJ Seks. 17 area, this restaurant is located opposite Honda (used to be Philips Lighting office).

Ipoh road trip (months ago)

Kate and I went to Ipoh for a friend's wedding. On the next day after the wedding, we decided to eat from breakfast till dinner hehe .... of course that did not happen.

We decided to try the famous dim sum in Restaurant Foh San. Actually, this is my 2nd time here. I can only remember how big the prawns in the "hah kau" was.

It was crowded on a Sunday morning. After waiting for 15 mins, we got our seat. Due to the crowd, everyone had to self-serve.

I have to admit. My entire Sunday was eating but I did not take all the photos as planned. The food looked too good to resist and I wasted to no time "chowing" it down....muahaha.

A few minutes walk away is a well known "tau-fu-fah" stall. When I was there, the shop has yet opened and there was already a queue. So I jalan-jalan go buy other stuff and when i returned the queue was much longer.

My impression before visiting this shop was it would be the typical Soy Bean outlet, with chairs, fan, tables and etc. In return, the size (width) of this shop lot was as small my my maid's room! But business was really good.

So Kate and I tried the "mix" (tau fu fah + tau cheung shui). Shokalingam!

The tau fu fah was so gentle and tangy that we wanted to eat more but we did not. We needed to safe space for more food.

Next stop was the famous "Ma Da Liu Curry Mee". We arrived at 11am. Again, had to queue and it was raining.

We got our seat (shared with an older couple). So as any typical customer would do is walk towards the "boss" and place my order. KNN, in return, he ask me to sit down and wait. He will take my order when he is ready. MCH.

So we waited lah. 20 - 35 minutes later, he came to take our order. The delicious curry noodles was served in 10 minutes. (Once again, I knew i wanted to capture the moment, but i did not...sorry).

The curry noodles was indeed different. It had a more spicy and "more curry powder" taste.

The 3 makan stops ended at almost 1pm. Stomachs were bloated. We failed to find the "yong-tau-fu" at the "tai-shueh-tau", but I know I will be back.

Location: If you can find Foh San, most of the eateries are hearby. Restaurant Foh San is located at: No. 2, Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar (used to be known as the Ozbourne Street).

Air Panas, Setapak - weekend wet market

Kate and I went to the wet market in the morning to "stock up" for the week. Hope to have time to cook up a feast for the both of us next week. The cooking was easy, the cleaning was the hardest part.

Before we begin, we had to fill our stomachs and the curry noodles here is amongst the best I have tasted.

This kopitiam is located opposite to the side-entrance to the wet market. You will not miss it as delicious steamed chicken at a stall by the entrance.

The famous breakfast: Curry Noodles with kampong chicken. The curry is really good with sufficient "santan", generous amount of "see hum" and juicy and tangy kampung steamed chicken.

Kate had the "hor fun" kampung chicken noodle. The soup was delicious and the steamed kampung chicken was yummy.

For a great start on a Sunday, this cost us only RM 6.80

A few collegues and myself went to this place for dinner. It was recommended for the freshness of the seafood, but a little pricey.

We chose the famous "herbs soup".

We ordered a set for 4 pax and added on prawns and fish.

Location: Was so busy eating and forgot about the address. It is located in Damansara Jaya. Drive along past the old Projet. It is located on the opposite amongst the housing area. You cannot miss it.

The most talked about Chilli Pan Mee

Most food bloggers have reviewed the famous Chilli Pan Mee in KL town. I have visited it a few times and a few more times hehe...

My amateur-ish photo taking caught the eyes of the "boss" and he yelled "Leng chai, hmm hor yee ying siong, hmm koi" or (in english: Hey handsome, don't take my photo coz I have not put on my mascara).

Kate ordered the soup version of the pan mee. The noodles did not really go well with the soup, better off with the dry version.

Sometimes people are just blind. When allocated car parks are MEANT TO BE ALLOCATED FOR SOMEONE, just f*****g obey the rules and park somewhere else.

I really don't get it. Is it ignorance or just plain dumb? My conclusion, it should be both.

It was a long day of meetings and I look forward to settling down in the office to complete my stuff. Some MBA 3159 had to spoil the day.

"Shockalingam" Taiwanese Noodle lunch

I have visited this place more than I can remember. Everyime I crave for a "noodle" lunch, I will drive myself to Taiwan Noodle House in Ampang Point.

If you go during lunch time on weekdays, you will have to wait. They have renovated the place and have added more seats (located along the walkway in the mall).

This place serves the best (in my opinion) noodles. A variety of choices are available. It's not so oily, clean, generous in their serving and the soup is hot till you finish your bowl of noodles.

I ordered Beef Soup Noodles. It came with a good serving of vegetables and chunks of beef.

Kate (gf) ordered Chicken Soup Noodles. Dry noodles (kon loh) is available but Kate says it's nothing compared to the ones that comes with soup.

To enjoy your bowl of noodles here, you MUST accompany it with the chilli paste and salted spicy vegetables. Remember, you MUST! It's amazing how it "turns on" your taste buds and make you wanna eat the whole bowl.

I was so obsessed with the chilli and vegetable that once the waitress told me that if I ordered anymore, I would have to pay.....B***h.

Technology is a saving grace. I no longer need to download my favourite shows from torrents, I now watch it through PPStream.

You essential requirement is a broadband with satisfactory bandwidth and "taa dahh!".

So how can I not have time to update my blog? Keke ... nothing but lame excuses.

There are also movie, music and a whole lot of things to watch. So postpone all your weekend plans and stream!

Busy at work. It's year end and in the nature of my job (sales) , it is the most stressful time.

I have not had much time to update my blog, my apologies to my faithful readers. People have asked, is it too hard to take 5 mins of my time? Actually the answer is: Not really but I never do find the time to really do it. If I have 5 mins to spare, it would been invested in napping or just chilling (e.g. watching Astro or PPstream).

I need a break. A holiday. A getaway. An outlet to unwind the year. Top of the list if a "beach holiday" but still want to go back to Hong Kong (love the food, weather and life there). Next action plan: get up and starting planning for the holiday!

Noble House Restaurant, KL

I visited Noble House for a lunch buffet after a fellow blogger reviewed it.

Peking Duck is the fastest dish to finish and will not be replaced in this buffet.

I always wondered, why only eat the skin? How about the juicy flesh?

I paid RM 39.90 per pax for this buffet which entitles me to a bowl of shark's fin soup. Tasted quite good but I have doubts if it was 100% sharks fin.

Pig spare parts ... did not enjoy this meal.

Other dishes (can't remember all out it)

The variety of dishes served is well prepared and creative. I have also read in other blogs that the menu changes but the signature dishes will stay e.g. Peking Duck and Roasted Pork.

Oh, fresh salmons are available too, but no oysters.

Jap food turned local dishes

I did not go to Umai-Ya Jap-Buffet last weekend becuase I attended a wedding (should not have cancelled the Jap-Buffet!)

We arrived earlier than the guest-of-honor, sat on a VIP table (was given the c**k stare by other VIPs), was rejected from taking VIP food. Anyway, i peeked at the food, no diff laaa....what's so VIP about it?

The arrangement looked buffet style but serving was limited to only 1 chicken, 1 small prawn and a small scoop of beef rendang.

The only help-yourself-and-eat-all-you-can was the sambal ikan bilis! No offense but I thought it was REALLY self service. Below are some pics of what was served (2% the amount seen in pics, and pics are not taken from the wedding, it's google-ed)

Restaurant Tak Fok (Hong Kong Seafood)

Me and my friends celebrated SQ's birthday last Monday at a busy seafood restaurant in Bandar Sri Damansara. I strongly advised those who wish to try out this place to call for reservations. We arrived at 7.15pm and was shocked by the long queue.

I heard from a friend that they serve delicious crabs (i have had better ones at Kepong Wai-sek-kai)

Vegetables
Cheesy Crabs

(Man Tau)

(Sweet & Sour crabs)

Overall, the food was not bad. Food was served on time (but maybe they rushed, therefore quality and taste was a lil' comprimised). Oh..parking is a headache!

Japanese Buffet

Wow! Another Japanese buffet? I am planning to go this weekend. News is it is available on weekends from 11.30am - 2.30pm and they serve free-flow of either Tiger Beer or Ocha (REALLY!?)

Sally Yeh concert

To be honest, i have only attended 3 concerts so far: Jacky Cheung (1990 something), Rain (don't laugh!) and Sally Yeh (she is hot).

Learnings from going to concerts:
- It does not start on time
- People scream for nothing, you tend to scream along
- Parking is a headache
- No food/drinks allowed. Buy from the entrance (cunning b****rds!)
- Leaving the concert is like getting stuck in Jalan Sultan Ismail
- Uncomfortable seats
- No cam/camcorders (Mobile phones are now 2mb+ lar my friend)

Anyway.....

Summary of Sally's concert in Jan 2007.

- 2 wardrobe change
- 3 hours concert
- 20+ songs
- amazing vocals

- lousy security (i bought cheapest tickets but ended up in VVIP area)

Yummy Japanese buffet at "RAKUZEN"

I am a big fan of Japanese food. When I hear the word "eat-all-you-want for 1 price", I will be there.

I came to know about this place from fellow foodbloggers. Tucked in Chulan Square, this place only opens on during weekends (calling for reservations is the safest). If you are going there with a big group of friends, you are please to know that there are a few "tatami" rooms available that can fit more than 8 pax.

As i was busy trying to digest the whole menu, i did not manage to take many photos but here are a few but if it still does not make you crave, please call them at 03-21456200.

A great selection of shashimi is available (too busy eating, so no photos). Here is the score:
